Karuneegar Wedding Rituals
Nitchayadaartham refers to the engagement ceremony among the Karuneegar community. This is conferred as a confirmation of marriage and followed by the construction of the wedding pandaal in a ceremony known as Pandakaal. Arsan Kaal refers to the morning wedding ritual where elderly ladies of the wedding party pray to the branch of the Arasu or the Holy fig tree for protecting the bride and the groom from all evil. The bride's brother garlands the groom when his party arrives-this is known as Maapillai Azhaippu. This is followed by Padapuja and Mahalaxmi Puja as well as Manai Pongal. Kanikadam is when the bride is given away by her father to the groom. Mangalam or the tying of the sacred thread is an important part of the wedding ceremony as well. Finally, the couple seals their vows in the presence of the Homam or holy fire.
